When life hits hard or your days are as packed and stressful as can be: What do you do?
Don't ask me. I wait and hope it passes quickly.
That's tough, sure. But I certainly know how to handle these situations, how to calm down, charge my battery and stay capable of action.
A big decision is due and the pressure is on. What happens?
Well, that depends. Every decision is different and I try to satisfy everyone.
Tried and trusted tools and strategies to apply one by one - I know what helps me to decide in any situation!
Do you have a trusted mentor or coach at your side for challenges in your leadership life?
Well... I've considered it already.
Sure - could call him/her right now.
We are calling one of your team members right now and ask about your department's mission:
A department mission? Why would we need one, we have a company mission...
Sure, they'll know it in their sleep.
You're in a Leadership Mastermind Group and today's exchange is about developing your people. What do you talk about?
My people learn by completing challenging tasks and projects on a daily basis.
We have a good mix of regular development talks and written development agreements with a long-term perspective. Furthermore, I'm in close contact with HR to support my people in ongoing programs and continuously find their best options.
Your are sick for three weeks. What happens?
I fear it will be total chaos...
No worries at all, my team got it even if I don't answer the phone for a few days!
A magazine interviews you about your leadership style. What's the essence?
As a leader, I am who I am and I do what I do - with most people it works.
My leadership style is less about me than about what my people need in different situations. Flexibility and the situational fit are key!
You're addressing your employee to ask why a certain task still isn't done. You need it for a customer, urgently! And suddenly the person starts to cry. How do you react?
To be honest: I wish to be out of the situation immediately. I can provide a tissue but other than that - honestly, this should be about the task.
It's easy for me to put myself in the shoes of this person and start de-escalating by asking kind questions and show understanding.
If we asked your team about your communication skills they would say...
He/she certainly means well!
He/she always finds the right words and communication approach in any situation!
When you think about the changes in your life right now, you...
... are frustrated, annoyed, exhausted: Can't there be peace and quiet, at least for a while?
... breathe. And try to arrange myself with the fact that change is a constant condition.
Your team member steps into your office with a new idea. How do you react?
I tell him/her that I appreciate the idea, but unfortunately, there is no time/budget. I need to manage expectations here right away.
I tell him/her that the idea sounds great and suggest to team up with colleagues to also figure out how it could be financed.
Think of an important project you're responsible for. What does count most for you?
Meeting the deadline, reaching the goal - I have result responsibility!
Creating the best benefit for all stakeholders involved! A healthy balance between performance and well-being is key.
How's your perspective: How many people are concerned by your actions and decisions?
My family, friends, team and people within my organisation. And our customers, of course!
I consider myself to be one of about 8 billion people on the planet and we're all connected.
